Was My Witr Prayer on Time despite Hearing the Call to the Fajr Prayer?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

If someone was praying Witr and Fajr adhan was called in during the third cycle, did they complete Witr on time?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

It is obligatory to start and finish the prayer within its time, and doing otherwise without a legitimate excuse is wrong and sinful. Thus your Witr prayer has not been prayed on time if the Fajr time enters while you are still praying the Witr prayer.

Allah, Most High, says: “Prayer is obligatory for the believers at prescribed times.” [Quran, 4:103]

Nonetheless, this Witr prayer that has been prayed while the Fajr time has entered remains valid. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

And Allah knows best.
