Do I Have to Abandon the Love of Cars to Believe in Pure Tawhid?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I have loved sports cars ever since I was a child, and I still do, being a physics student at university. I started taking Islam more seriously and am trying to perfect my practice. I learned that Tawhid involves only desiring the love of Allah Most High. Does this mean that I have to abandon my love for cars? I love how Allah Most High allowed us the intellect to make such vehicles, and it is only because of Him that we are able to use them. Please help me in understanding how I should deal with this situation.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

No, you do not have to abandon the love of automobiles and cars, as long it is in moderation and away from extravagance.

Allah Loves to See Signs of His Blessings

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Verily when Allah Almighty bestows bounties upon a servant, He loves to see the traces of His bounties upon him. He dislikes one who wallows in misery and pessimism. Allah hates the obstinate questioner, and He loves those who are modest, chaste, and sober.” [Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-Iman]
