Is Learning the History of Magic Permitted?
Question:
Is learning the history of magic permitted?
Answer:
Dear questioner,
Thank you for your important question.
May Allah, Most High reward you for your desire to increase in knowledge.
In Islam, the study of black magic is sinful and prohibited. [Ibn Abidin, al-Hashiyah]
For the general Muslim, learning the history of magic would be considered a useless pursuit (lahw). It does not benefit them in any way just as studying the history of film etc.
Our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) advised us to be concerned with using our time for that which is beneficial for us.
“Two blessings which many people waste: Good health and free time.” [Bukhari, al-Sahih]
For the ruqya practitioner, studying the history of magic should only be done on a need to know basis. Preferably, the practitioner should have a qualified teacher whom they seek guidance on all things ruqya related.
Practicing ruqya requires one to have a strong connection to Allah, Most High, and to learn the various invocations from the Quran & Sunna that are used in curing magic. The history of magic has very little to do with the application of ruqya.
