What Is the Ruling on Placing the Name of Allah Alongside the Name of the Prophet?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
What is the ruling on placing the name of Allah (Most High) alongside the name of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace)?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It is permissible and good to place the Prophet’s name alongside the name of Allah (Most High), as implied in the Quran and mentioned in many hadith. See the links below.
Ibn Kathir (Allah have mercy on him) mentions in the Quranic commentary under the verse: وَرَفَعۡنَا لَكَ ذِكۡرَكَ (And have we not raised you to highest renown?)
The Meaning of Raising the Fame of the Prophet
Mujahid said, “I (Allah) am not remembered except that you are remembered with Me: I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) is the Messenger of Allah.”
Qatada said, “Allah raised his fame in this life and the Hereafter. No one gives a sermon, declares the Testimony of Faith (Shahada), or prays a prayer except that he proclaims it: I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) is the Messenger of Allah.
[Ibn Kathir, Tafsir Ibn Kathir]
Abu Sa‘id reports connectedly (marfu‘) that Jibril came to me. He said, “Your Lord and my Lord asks, how shall I raise your remembrance?” He replied, “Allah knows best.” He replied, “When I will be remembered, you will be remembered.”
[Mawsili, Musnad Abu Ya‘la, Ibn Hajar, Ithaf al-Mahara]
Marfu‘ refers to that narration in which the statements, actions, approvals, or qualities (shamail) are attributed to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).
Mawquf refers to a narration in which the statements or actions are attributed to a Companion (Allah be pleased with him).
