What is the Ruling on Vedic Astrology and their Predictions?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

My question is about Vedic astrology. There is majority of Hindus in India believe in Vedic astrology. They say that what their astrologers will predict will come true. So, my question is, as Islam says, astrology is fake. So how come their predictions can come true most of the time?

Can we take it as this that they believe in astrology, so Allah has only made their belief in that? And can we take it as, most of the time coincidence what they predict comes true? Please reply early; my faith (iman) is getting weak.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Our Belief – We Submit to the Unseen

Allah Most High has complete knowledge of the unseen and of future events. This is our belief. Everything that unfolds in this world is with the permission of Allah Most High being allowed to happen; he is in control of the cause and effect of everything.

“This is the Book! There is no doubt about it—a guide for those mindful (of Allah),
who believe in the unseen, establish prayer and donate from what We have provided for them.” [Quran, 2:2-3]

“Indeed, Allah (alone) has the knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn for tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” [Quran, 31:34]

“(He is the) Knower of the unseen, disclosing none of it to anyone except messengers of His choice. Then He appoints angel guards before and behind them.” [Quran, 26:27]

Their Belief -Find Other Systems

Allah Most High, through His wisdom, has kept open specific ways and methods for man to determine the unseen and future which sometimes turn out to be accurate but often untrue, like Vedic Astrology, telepathy, psychic readings, horoscopes, etc. Although Allah Most High has kept these avenues open, he has forbidden (haram) for man to utilize them and set our belief in them. This is a test for us not to fall this way and commit ourselves to Allah Most, His commands, and his Prophet’s teachings to determine our love in Him and obedience. They believe in other systems, so their life revolves around them, some turning out to be accurate and some untrue.

‘Imran ibn Husayn (Allah be pleased with him) reported the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “He is not one of us who reads omens or has them read for him, or who performs soothsaying, or has it performed for him, or who practices magic or has it practiced for him.” [Musnad al-Bazzar; Nahlawi, al-Durar al-Mubaha]
