Does Replacing ط with ت in Fatiha Recitation Invalidate Salah?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

I learned that errors in fatiha that change the meaning invalidate salah.

Please does replacing ط with ت in fatiha recitation invalidate salah?

Answer

I pray you are well.

Mistakes in Tajwid and Pronunciation

No, this is incorrect. Some mistakes may invalidate the prayer, but that would be if the meaning of a verse was changed drastically. In general, most of the mistakes that are common in people’s recitation would not affect the prayer.

In general, the recitation should sound like Arabic. Find a tadwid teacher and work on your recitation. (Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al Muhtar)

Focus on the Meanings

The sounds of the words of the Qur’an are the vehicles which carry the meanings. No doubt, proper recitation is important, but in the prayer the meaning should be the focus. This is a good place to start.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
