Does One Become Sinful by Forgetting the Quran? – Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

What does Shaikh Nabulsi state in al-Hadiqa al-Nadiyya, Sharh al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya about when one becomes sinful by forgetting the Quran?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, as part of a longer tradition, “The sins of my community were presented before me, and I didn’t see a sin more tremendous than that of a person who was granted a chapter (surah) or verse (ayah) of the Qur’an, and he forgot it.” [Tirmidhi]

The Hanafis explained that “forgetting” in this context means being unable to recite the Quran from the mushaf after learning it. The literal meaning of memorizing the Quran and forgetting is not meant here. Shaykh `Abdul Ghani al-Nabulsi says, “and this is a tremendous amount of expansiveness from Imam Abu Hanifa (Allah Most High have mercy upon him).”

May Allah Most High give us all divine success to recite the Quran daily, however little, and allow us to grow spiritually through it, Amin.
