Can Qurbani (Udhiya) Be Done In a Different Country?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan

Question: If a person is on holidays overseas for a few months, and he reaches Eid al-Adha in another country, does he have to sacrifice in that country? Can he send money back home where it is cheaper to slaughter an animal? I know someone who is intending to do this. It doesn’t sound ‘right’ but from a shariah perspective, is it acceptable?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and states.

Yes, that would be perfectly valid.

The only condition is that the sacrifice take place after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijja, although it may be done up till maghrib of the 12th of Dhul Hijja. What is given consideration in this regard is the actual place of sacrifice.
