The Three Degrees of Fasting

Kohl and Perfume While Fasting, and Women Wearing Perfume.

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question: Is it permissible for a woman to wear kohl while fasting? Can body spray (not perfume or containing alcohol) or Ithar be worn if one smells of odors after a work-out while out in public (such as at school)? Is it permissible during Ramadan and after the Holy month?

Answer: In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful.

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

It is permitted to apply kohl and oil (and other cosmetics), without dislike, when fasting [al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar].

Perfume has the same rulings when fasting.
However, it is not permitted for women to go out wearing perfume because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) firmly forbade it in rigorously authenticated hadiths.

Deodorant and creams that have a light scent – such that it is not obviously discernible to others unless they get really close – are permitted; however, women should avoid heavily scented personal care products.
