Is Insulting the Companions of the Prophet (Allah Bless Him and Give Him Peace) Disbelief (Kufr)?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Is insulting a companion of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) disbelief or not, and is insulting a wife of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) kufr or not?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health.

It is a grave matter to insult and curse the Companions of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). The one who openly does so deserves condemnation, reprimand, and even punishment.

And we do not mention any of the companions of the Messenger of Allah except only by way of praise. One should guard one’s tongue from speaking anything but good about the companions of Allah’s Messenger and particularly from cursing them.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, in a rigorously authenticated hadith, related by both Bukhari and Muslim, “Do not insult my companions, for, by Allah, if any of you gave gold the extent of Mount Uhud in charity, you would not reach even a handful or even half a handful [of what they did].” [Bukhari, Muslim, and others]

[Maghnisawi, Al-Fiqh al-Akbar]

I pray this helps answer your question.
