Is It Permissible for a Muslim Woman to Wear Wide Trousers?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I am struggling to understand what exactly is permissible in terms of wearing trousers for women. Is wide leg okay? How wide?

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah reward you for being concerned about following what pleases Allah Most High and His messenger, and may Allah make it easy for you.

Modesty

It is permissible to wear wide-leg pants because this hides the shape of the legs. I learned from my teachers that even wide-leg pants should be worn with tops that go past the knee. Because pant styles and body shapes vary, many women choose to stick to dresses, skirts, or abayas, as they provide complete coverage of the legs.

Fear Allah as Much as You Can

In regards to dressing for the sake of Allah, I recommend that you follow this verse from the Quran, “So be mindful of Allah to the best of your ability, hear and obey, and spend in charity—that will be best for you. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are (truly) successful.” [Quran, 64:16]
