What is the Severity of Sinning in the Noble City of Madina?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

If one commits a sin while in Madina, I have heard that there’s a hadith in which we are told that Allah Most High and the creation curse such a person, and their deeds are not accepted. Is it over for such a person, or can tawba clear them from this status?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

A number of hadiths mention the severity and gravity of committing sins against oneself and against others in the noble city of Madina. However, if one sincerely repents from his sin, seeks forgiveness, or asks for forgiveness from who is wronged, there is no doubt he will be forgiven and his repentance accepted, in sha’ Allah.

The Prophet’s City, Madina, is a Sanctuary

‘Ali (Allah be pleased with him) reported, We have nothing except the Book of Allah and this written paper from the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) (wherein is written:) “Madina is a sanctuary from ‘A’ir (a locality) to such-and-such. Whoever innovates something in it or abets someone who does, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and that of all the people! There shall be accepted from him neither barter (sarf) nor balance (‘adal).” [Bukhari]

The Sin of that Person who Harms the People of Madina

Sa’d (Allah be pleased with him) narrated, I heard the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) saying, “None plots against the people of Madina but that he will be dissolved (destroyed) like the salt is dissolved in water.” [Bukhari]

Whoever Terrorizes Madina is Cursed by Allah Most High

Sa’ib ibn Khallad (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever terrorizes the people of Medina with oppression, Allah will terrorize him. The curse of Allah, the angels, and the people altogether will be upon him. Allah will not accept his obligatory or voluntary good deeds on the Day of Resurrection.” [Ahmad] [Abdul-Haqq al-Dehlawi, Lama‘at al-Tanqih]
