Would We Still Be Blessed If We Committed Fornication before Marriage?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Would Allah bless our marriage if I married the man with whom I had committed fornication and repented?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question and concern about your marriage, overall life, and religion.

It is good you married the man you loved despite committing wrongdoing before marriage. There is no better solution than marriage, and you married him. Take comfort from the words of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Marriage Is Best for Those Who Love Each Other

Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “We do not see for those who love one another anything like marriage.” [Ibn Majah]

Do Not Despair

Allah Most High says, “Say, (O Prophet, that Allah says,) ‘O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah forgives all sins. He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Quran, 39:53]

Moving On in Life

One of the most excellent ranks in Islam is the rank of the remorseful. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “All of the children of Adam are prone to error (or sin), and the best of those who err (or sin) are those who constantly repent.” [Tirmidhi]

After establishing the rank of the one who turns aside from sin and turns to Allah Most High – one should not be despondent about not hoping for a good marriage and life.

May Allah Most High bless your marriage and be a means for healthy and righteous children, amin
