Does the Prophet (Allah Bless Him and Give Him Peace) Receive Mother’s Name as Well?
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
When we send blessings (salawat) upon the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), and our names are conveyed to him along with our father’s name – does he receive our mother’s name as well?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
The narrations do not mention that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) receives one’s mother’s name. This is in no way to diminish the mother’s status or to elevate the father’s status above hers. It is merely because lineage, according to the Arabs and Islam, is patrilineal.
The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Indeed, you will be called on the Day of Judgment by your names and the names of your forefathers, so give yourselves good names.” [Ahmad] [Ibn Alan, al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyya ‘ala al-Adhkar al-Nawawiyya]
