Is Picking Up My Sibling’s Clothes Considered Assisting Her in Dressing Sinfully?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Would it be haram to tidy up the haram clothes of my siblings if my parents asked me to tidy my room? And is it haram for someone who does cover their `awra to take care of their looks by brushing their hair?

Answer

Thank you for your question. Neither is sinful. One may pick up a sibling’s clothes no matter what the clothing is like, and one should take care to have good hygiene and look presentable. However, one should take note of the words of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) regarding brushing the hair below:

Allah Most High has told us in the Quran, “Truly Allah loveth those who turn unto Him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanliness. [Quran, 2:222]

And the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “ He who has hair should honor it.” [Abu Dawud]

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mughaffal: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) forbade combing the hair except every second day.” [Abu Dawud]
