Would Swallowing Residue from My Retainers Invalidate My Fast?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
I am wearing plastic, clear retainers for my teeth. Over time, some spots of white plaque/residue build up on them, which are difficult to clean. If I wear these retainers while fasting, would the validity of the fasting be affected? The residue has no taste, and I would imagine it does not dissolve in my mouth.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
No. The residue from your retainers does not break the fast, as no substance has passed down your throat. You said yourself that the spots are hard to remove. Thus, it is even less likely that they would come off and go down your throat.
