Does Sinning Near Copy of the Quran Count as Disrespect?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I committed the sin of watching pornography and masturbating in my bedroom, where a copy of the Quran was placed on a shelf above where I sleep. I feel deep regret and guilt.
Does this constitute disrespect toward the Quran? If so, what is my responsibility, and how can I sincerely repent and seek Allah’s forgiveness?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question. Your regret is a sign and a good step toward the right direction. Allah Most High keep you steadfast.
First and foremost, you must genuinely feel repentance, regret, and remorse, and never watch it again, while having a firm resolve about this. Doing the above is a sign of disrespect to yourself, your faith, and anything sacred nearby. However, don’t lose hope because you have stepped in the right direction.
Practical Steps to Purify the Heart
Commit to Abundant Repentance. Engage in sincere tawba (repentance) regularly. Perform the five daily prayers along with reading the Quran, doing regular dhikr, Salawat, and seeking forgiveness, and establish a routine for all of these. Keep the company of the righteous; attend circles of knowledge and remembrance, and surround yourself with pious people. Simplify your life and focus on acts that bring you closer to Allah. Act on your knowledge, apply what you learn in your daily life.
