Does the Rib Hadith Mean Women Are Crooked or Inferior?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

Does the hadith about women being created from a rib mean that they’re crooked or inferior?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate.

No. The hadith of the woman being created from the rib highlights the complementarity between men and women. A man is not complete without his life partner, and a woman is not complete without a husband.

A Quranic Sign of Serenity, Love, and Mercy

Allah mentions that one of His great signs is that He has created for you from yourselves spouses, that you may find serenity therein, and that He has placed between you love and mercy.

The Rib as Protection, Strength, and Support

The nature of the rib is that it is a source of protection and strength. The rib protects the heart, both the spiritual heart and the emotional heart. It is a great support. The chest protects our vital organs, and the rib is strong.

The Call to Gentleness

At the same time, the rib must be handled with sensitivity. That is what the Prophets emphasize: be gentle with your womenfolk. Recognize their significant role in your lives, and be gentle with them, not harsh; do not treat them in a way that would break them.

And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
