How Authentic Is Imam Abu Hanifa’s Boat Analogy Debate Narrative?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is the story of Imam Abu Hanifa debating atheists using the boat analogy authentically sourced?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

This story is mentioned in the book “Manaqib Abi Hanifa” (Noble Qualities of Imam Abu Hanifa), written by Muwaffaq Ahmad al-Makki.

The materialists (Dahriyya) once asked Caliph Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur to appoint someone to debate them. Naturally, the Caliph chose Imam Abu Hanifa (Allah have mercy on him). The people were informed and gathered for the debate.

On the scorching riverbank, the participants and the Caliph were all in their places, but Abu Hanifa did not arrive on time.

The crowd grew restless. Whispers and murmurs began to spread. Some said, “If he had any argument or proof, he wouldn’t have delayed!” The Caliph himself was embarrassed, as he hadn’t expected Abu Hanifa to be late for such an important duty.

Just before sunset, Abu Hanifa finally appeared. He was immediately questioned about the reason for his delay.

Abu Hanifa responded: “I was on the other side of the Tigris River and couldn’t find a boat to bring me across. I waited a long time, and then something strange happened: A plank of wood fell from the sky, and another piece floated by in the river. Suddenly, a hammer, nails, and wooden pegs appeared. They assembled themselves, the pieces joined together, paint and oil descended, and everything fell perfectly into place. A complete boat formed by itself, and I boarded it and made it here — but a bit late!”

The crowd exclaimed: “O Abu Ja‘far! The man you appointed to debate us is mad!” But Abu Hanifa calmly replied: “You deny that a boat can come into existence without a maker — yet you accept that the skies with their constellations, the earth with its valleys, and the oceans with their waves were all created by chance, without a creator or design? How can that be?”

Another Story: “Show me your mind, and I will show you Allah.”

An atheist once approached Imam Abu Hanifa and said, “O Imam, have you seen your Lord?”

Abu Hanifa replied: “Glory be to my Lord, eyes cannot perceive Him.”

The man asked: “Have you heard Him, touched Him, smelled Him, or felt Him?”

The Imam answered:

“Glory be to Allah, nothing is like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.”

The atheist said, “If you have neither seen nor perceived Him in any way, how can you prove He exists?”

So Abu Hanifa asked him: “Have you seen your mind?”

The atheist replied: “No.”

Have you felt, smelled, heard, or touched it?”

He said: “No.”

Abu Hanifa asked: “Are you sane or insane?”

The atheist replied: “I’m sane!”

Abu Hanifa said, “Then where is your mind?”

The atheist said, “It exists.”

Abu Hanifa said: “Just as you affirm the existence of your unseen mind, I affirm the existence of Allah, unseen but real.” [Ahmad al-Makki, Manaqib Abi Hanifa]
