Is It a Sin To Unconsciously Sing a Christmas Song?

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

I live in Germany; for example, music playing in the shopping center, such as Christmas music, gets stuck in my head when I’m shopping. I sometimes catch myself unconsciously singing or humming along to these songs. But I stop immediately when I catch myself doing it and realize. Is that a sin?

Answer

As long as the song doesn’t have any meaning that clashes with the teachings of Islam, then singing it will not be sinful. It is better to have a basic routine of dhikr prepared in one’s mind for shopping.

Markets and shops are some places that breed heedlessness of Allah, and remembering Allah in those places is extremely beneficial. Keep busy with some simple dhikr, and Allah will reward you abundantly.

May Allah facilitate this for us.
