Is It Permissible To Sign A School Accountability Statement?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible to sign a school testimonial declaring that we will be accountable before Allah, parents, and students, especially if this is tied to taking government-approved leave? Will such a statement increase our accountability on the Day of Judgment?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

You can sign such a statement if it reflects your role and intentions. It does not create new accountability but acknowledges what Islam already holds. Focus on your sincerity and genuine effort in fulfilling your responsibilities, rather than merely signing.

It aligns with the Islamic concept of “amana” (trust). As teachers or school staff members, our duties are indeed a trust that we need to fulfill with integrity. Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah commands you to return trusts to their rightful owners…” [Quran 4:58]

Each of You is a Shepherd for his Flock

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah(Allah bless him and give him peace) said,

“Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock.

The leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects. A man is the guardian of his family, and he is responsible for them.

A woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and his children and is responsible for them.

The servant of a man is a guardian of the property of his master, and he is responsible for it. Undoubtedly, every one of you is a shepherd responsible for his flock.” [Bukhari; Muslim]

Statement Tied to Leave Approval

If the statement relates to leave approval or official processes and does not ask you to testify falsely or impose burdens beyond your actual role, it is generally permissible to sign it. You can always speak to the management if you cannot fulfill a particular role or want to be excused from a specific task.
