What Is the Wisdom behind Not Telling Others about Our Bad Dreams?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

I would like to ask about the wisdom behind the hadith (which I believe is in Sahih Bukhari), where the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) teaches us that good dreams come from Allah and bad dreams are from the Shaytan and that we should take refuge in Allah from it and shouldn’t tell anyone about it.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate.

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

Among the wisdom behind not mentioning bad dreams is that the source of bad dreams is either our fears and concerns or the whispering of the Shaytan. None of these harm us in any way, by the Mercy of Allah.

Instead, we seek refuge in Allah, act on the sunnas related to bad dreams, and have complete trust in Allah (Most High).
