Where Is the Residing Place of Imam al-Ghazali (Allah Have Mercy on Him)?

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

On the internet, there is conflicting information about the resting place of Imam Ghazali (Allah have mercy upon him). Which is the correct location? I don’t hear grand Urs happening on Imam Ghazali’s mausoleum as we do for other Awliyas. Why?

Is it correct that Imam’s Urs falls on 14 Jumada al-Awwal?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

There are varying opinions on the final resting place of Imam Abu al-Hamid al-Ghazali (Allah have mercy on him).

The opinion that seems to be the most historically accurate is that Imam al-Ghazali is buried in Tus, Iran, just outside the city of Mashhad.

After some basic research, there isn’t any difference of opinion as to the date of the Imam’s passing. He passed away Monday, 14th of Jumada al-Akhira in the year 505 AH, corresponding to December 19th, 1111 CE.
