Is It Permissible to Use Explicit Sexual Emojis When Texting One’s Spouse?

Question

Is it permissible to use explicit sexual emojis when texting one’s spouse?

Answer

Thank you for your question.  These emojis are not potentially sinful to use, as they fall into the realm of obscenity and indecency. One could use words with one’s spouse instead. I advise avoiding the emojis, as the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) advised us:

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “There is never any obscenity in a thing, but it mars it, and there is never any modesty in a thing, but it adorns it.” [Ibn Maja]

And the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The believer does not stab people in the back, nor does supplicate he against them, nor does he talk about that which is immoral or disgusting.” [Tirmidhi]
