Is It Permissible to Use Products to Lighten My Skin?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

When I was born, I was fair-skinned, and then when I grew up, I became dark. And I used curd on my face to get lighter or fairer skin. Is it haram to use something to become fair for me?

Answer

Thank you for your question. Please know that the color of your skin is perfect, as Allah does not make any mistakes when he creates someone’s complexion.

It is permissible for you to use these products, but they usually don’t work, cause harm from the harsh chemicals and only cause or cement your low self-esteem. I advise you to avoid these and see the very useful tips below.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Allah does not look at your forms or your wealth, rather, He looks at your deeds and your hearts.” [Ibn Maja]
