What Are the Daily Supplications That One Should Be Consistent With?

Answered by Dr. Muhammad Fayez Awad

Question

What are the daily supplications that one should be consistent with?

Answer

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon the Master of the Messengers, his Family, and all his Companions.

The Importance of Remembrance (Dhikr) in Islam

The remembrance of Allah (Most High) is the best of deeds, the most purifying, the highest in rank, and the most beloved to Allah (Most High). It was narrated by Mu‘adh Ibn Jabal (Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

“Shall I not inform you of the best of your deeds, the purest of them with your Sovereign, the highest in your ranks, and better for you than spending gold and silver, or meeting your enemy and striking their necks while they strike yours?” They said, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “The remembrance of Allah.” [Ahmad]

It was also narrated from him that he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace): “Which deeds are most beloved to Allah?” He said, “That you die while your tongue is moist with the remembrance of Allah.” [Ibn Hibban]

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) provided numerous supplications for different situations, highlighting their great reward and immense virtue. I will divide them into two categories for brevity without quoting the full text of each hadith:

First Category: Morning and Evening Supplications

It includes:

The Master Supplication for Seeking Forgiveness

“O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity except You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I uphold Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.” [Bukhari]

Morning and Evening Invocation

In the morning: “O Allah, by You we have entered the morning, by You we have entered the evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.”

In the evening: “O Allah, by You we have entered the evening, by You we have entered the morning, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the final return.” [Ibn Hibban]

Declaration of Faith Upon Waking or Sleeping

“We have entered the morning (or evening) upon the natural disposition of Islam, and the word of sincerity, and the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace), and the way of our father Ibrahim, inclining toward truth and submitting to Allah, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.” [Nasa’i; Ahmad]

Supplication for Well-Being

“O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from in front of me, behind me, on my right, on my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being destroyed from beneath me.” [Ibn Hibban; Ibn Majah]

Acknowledging Allah’s Dominion

“We have entered the morning (or evening) and so has the dominion of Allah, and all praise is due to Allah. There is no deity except Allah alone with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable. O Lord, I ask You for the good of this day (or night) and the good that comes after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day (or night) and the evil that comes after it. O Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and from the evils of old age. O Lord, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire and the punishment of the grave.” [Muslim; Ibn Hibban; Nasa’i]

Seeking Protection from Evil

“O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord of everything and its Sovereign, I bear witness that there is no deity but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul and from the evil of Satan and his trap, and that I commit evil against myself or drag it onto a Muslim.” [Tirmidhi; Ahmad]

Contentment with Allah, Islam, and the Prophet

“I am content with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) as my Prophet.” [Hakim; Nasa’i]

A Plea for Allah’s Assistance

“O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek assistance. Set right all of my affairs and do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye.” [Diya’ Maqdisi; Hakim; Nasa’i]

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi

“Allah! There is no god (worthy of worship) except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He (fully) knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills (to reveal). His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.” [Quran, 2:255]

Second Category: Supplications Recommended for Repetition

It includes:

Seeking Well-Being

“O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no deity except You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no deity except You.” [Ibn Hibban; Nasa’i]

Glorifying Allah

“Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him, to the number of His creation, the extent of His pleasure, the weight of His Throne, and the ink of His words.” [Muslim; Ibn Khuzayma; Ibn Hibban]

Reciting Surat al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and al-Nas

Reciting Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Falaq, and Surat al-Nas three times. Whoever recites them three times in the morning and evening will suffice him from everything.

Seeking Protection by Allah’s Name

“In the name of Allah, by whose name nothing in the earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” (Three times). [Ibn Hibban; Tirmidhi; Ibn Majah; Ahmad]

Bearing Witness to Allah’s Oneness

“O Allah, I have entered the morning (or evening), and I bear witness to You, the bearers of Your Throne, Your angels, and all of Your creation that You are Allah, there is no deity except You, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger.” (Four times). [Diya’ Maqdisi; Abu Dawud]

Asking for Beneficial Knowledge and Pure Provision

“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and accepted deeds.” [Nasa’i; Ibn Majah; Ahmad]

Repeating Some Adhkar One Hundred Times

“There is no deity but Allah, alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable.” (One hundred times). [Bukhari; Muslim]

“Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him.” (One hundred times). [Bukhari]

“I seek forgiveness from Allah.” (One hundred times). [Muslim; Ibn Hibban]

“Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” (One hundred times)

“There is no deity but Allah, alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable.” (One hundred times). [Bukhari; Muslim]

Salawat

Sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Recommendation

It is important for a Muslim to follow the example of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) in his supplications and invocations for various situations and times.

Among the best collections of invocations is the book by Imam Yahya Ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631–676 AH), titled “Hilyat al-Abrar wa Shi‘ar al-Akhyar fi Talkhis al-D‘wat wa al-Adhkar al-Mustahabbah fi al-Layl wa al-Nahar,” commonly known as “Al-Adhkar al-Nawawiyya.”

May Allah make us among those who frequently remember Him, both men and women. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
