What Should We Read for Forgiveness of the Deceased?

Question: Please mention what should be read for the forgiveness of the deceased soul?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

Of the things that one can do for the deceased person is to pray for their forgiveness. This can be done in any language, at any time and with one’s own words.

Moreover, one can, and should, along with family and friends, recite portions of the Qur’an such as chapter (surah) Ya Sin, or optimally, complete a whole recitation of the Qur’an and donate the reward to the deceased person. It is strongly recommended to supplicate after completing a recital of the Qur’an, therefore, one should use this opportunity to, specifically, pray for the deceased person.

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of God (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “When a man dies, his actions are cut off except for three – an on-going sadaqa, knowledge which brought benefit and a virtuous son who makes supplication for him.” [Muslim]

Consider purchasing a copy of ‘Prayers for Forgiveness’, translated by Shaykh Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf: http://www.al-rashad.com/Prayers-for-Forgiveness-Softcover_p_2774.html

And Allah knows best.
