Is it Permissible to View Listings Online Despite Women Without Hijab Showing?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Should I overlook product listings featuring women while searching for items like mugs online? Or should I focus solely on listings without images of women, akin to the Islamic concept of lowering the gaze?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health.

It will be permissible to search for a mug on a common sale platform. One should initially search alternative websites that don’t have this issue. However, as you mention, there can be hijabless women; one should avoid looking at the person, for example, by enlarging the mug picture to conceal the picture of the woman. Some would say you have one’s wife or sister to sit alongside you. This is mindfulness (taqwa).

The Key – Be Mindful

“So be mindful of Allah to the best of your ability, hear and obey, and spend in charity—that will be best for you. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successful.” [Quran, 64:16]
