Question
What Is the Wisdom Behind the Quran Recommending 2 or 2.5 Years of Breastfeeding?
Answer
Islam has emphasized the importance of breastfeeding for 1400 years, long before modern nutritionists and medical scientists recognized its significance in providing complete nutrition for babies up to the age of two. It is a foundation for the baby’s optimal physical and mental development and contributes to the mother’s overall health.
Allah Most High says, “Mothers may breastfeed their children for two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing period.” [Quran, 2:233]
Cleveland Clinic states in its report, “Breastfeeding has many benefits for you and your baby. It helps build your baby’s immune system and offers the perfect nutrition. Some of the health benefits to you include a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer.’
