Is the Hadith About the Discovery of Gold in the Euphrates Connected to the Mahdi?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is there any hadith linking the discovery of gold in the Euphrates or a loud bang in Ramadan as signs preceding the Mahdi?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Below are hadiths related to the discovery of gold and the loud sound in Ramadan. The former is mentioned under the signs connecting with the emergence of the Mahdi in Shaykh Ali al-Muttaqi’s book, Al-Burhan Fi Alamat al-Mahdi. See the link below.

Sign of the Hour is Fighting for Wealth

Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The Hour will not be established until the Euphrates river uncovers a mountain of gold and people will fight over it. Every ninety-nine people out of a hundred will be killed, and each man among them will say: Perhaps I will be the one who is saved!” [Muslim]

Loud Sound

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said that if the 14th of Ramadan was a Thursday, then during the night, a sound would be heard in the sky – the voice of Jibril. Due to this voice, seventy thousand people would die, seventy thousand people would become mute, seventy thousand people would become blind, and seventy thousand people would become deaf. Only those who remained in their houses prostrating to Allah and saying “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is Great) in a loud sound would be safe.

[Tabarani and Ibn Abi ‘Asim narrated this hadith on the authority of Fayruz al-Daylami. However, Haythami said that this Hadith is very weak, so it should not be taken as proof]

Signs of the Hour

Below is a link to the Signs of the Hour by Ibn Kathir (Allah have mercy on him) and Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Adani (Allah have mercy on him)
