Are Wedding Rings Necessary in Marriage?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

If we are a young couple and finance is an issue for now, do we need to provide each other with rings, or what is the ruling on that?

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah bless your union, fill it with goodness, and make it an example of following the sunna of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Rings

Exchanging rings is a manifestation of culture and is not required in Islam, nor even sunna. It is noteworthy that a man may only wear a silver ring, according to most schools of thought, and those are pretty affordable.
