Can a Muslim Serve in an Army That May Fight Muslims?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Question
A New Zealand Muslim (Hanafi) is entering the army. He is uncertain whether he may be deployed to a Muslim country and assigned to fight Muslims, and asks whether this is impermissible.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
I pray you are in the best of health and faith. May Allah reward you for your careful consideration and your concern to act in a manner pleasing to Him.
It is permitted to serve in the army, provided you do not take part in any unjust fighting or in the unlawful taking of life—whether of Muslims or others whose lives are protected. The act of enlisting is not itself forbidden. What is forbidden is to participate in oppression or in the shedding of blood that Allah has made sacred.
The weight here is the sanctity of a believer’s life. Allah says of one who kills a believer deliberately that his recompense is Hell, and He warns gravely against it [Quran 4:93].
He also says that whoever takes a life unjustly, it is as though he had slain all mankind [Quran 5:32]. No order and no uniform lifts this.
For this reason, it is not permitted to join a force if you know you will be directed to fight unjustly—whether against Muslims or non-combatants. If the mission is truly defensive and just, then such service may be lawful and even praiseworthy.
Because you may not know your deployment in advance, it is best to seek clarity and assurance before committing.
Seek a Role That Allows You to Serve With a Clear Conscience
Actions are by intentions, as our Beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught. Let your intention be to serve justice and to protect life, never to harm the innocent. In practice, ask about non-combat and support roles.
Learn what options exist for conscientious objection or reassignment, and, where possible, put your conditions in writing.
Before you commit, consult a trustworthy scholar with the details: the specific force, likely deployments, and your intended role. Pray the prayer of guidance (istikhara).
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Whoever sincerely seeks His pleasure will find a way forward, by Allah’s grace.
And Allah knows best.
