Is Polymer Clay Permissible When It Contains Animal-Derived Ingredients?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I bought Sculpey polymer clay, a man-made modeling material made from plastic PVC that hardens by baking. I found out on their website that it contains animal-based ingredients.
If these ingredients are derived from haram animals, would they be permissible after being processed into polymer clay?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Polymer clay is mainly made of PVC and plasticizers. If these are chemically altered beyond recognition (istihala), they may be considered permissible. However, if you want to avoid doubts, then use and choose non-animal alternatives.
Esteemed Muftis classify these types of industrial products as chemical transformation (istihala), necessity, and public predicament (umam al-balwa), as they are widely used in the industry. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Zayla‘i, Tabyin al-Haqa’iq]
