Is Using a Derma Roller to Stimulate Beard Growth Permissible?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it permissible to use a derma roller to encourage beard growth in areas where the beard has not naturally grown?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Yes, it is permissible to use derma rollers for restorative purposes to stimulate and boost hair growth.
A derma roller uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the scalp, thereby boosting healing, collagen production, and blood flow to reactivate dormant follicles. It boosts hair growth, especially when used in serums, by improving absorption.
Cosmetic versus Restorative: A Key Distinction
A treatment done solely for cosmetic or enhancement reasons is not allowed. It is only permitted when a restorative procedure is used to correct abnormalities and defects.
There is an important principle here: if something is abnormal or defective, restoring it to its natural form is permitted. This is considered a restorative procedure rather than a cosmetic or beautification procedure. Medical restorative procedures aimed at fixing defects and abnormalities are not viewed as altering Allah’s creation.
For example, a person may be born with a crooked nose, a cleft lip, or an extra finger. Restorative medical procedures to repair these defects are acceptable, as they involve correcting an abnormality.
