Can Halal Food Be Cooked on Contaminated Cookware?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

If there are minor traces of burnt pork residue left on cookware, can halal food prepared in such cookware still be considered permissible, especially if these particles are very small compared to the volume of the food?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

If there are pieces of pork, burnt or otherwise, on cookware, they must be removed and washed before preparing other food on that cookware. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

This is both because ingesting pork, even in small pieces, is strictly prohibited and because the pork is impure. [Ibid.]

If there are merely traces of pork residue, not pork itself, burnt or otherwise, this is different. Due to exposure to heat and fire, the residue is purified through a legal process known as istihala (a transformation of state). [Ibid.]

Hope this helps
