Does Raising My Voice in Prayer Invalidate It?

Hanafi Fiqh

Question: Assalamu’alaykum

I was praying and I mistakenly voiced out a little of the du’a before the salaam even though it was not loud. Is my prayer still valid?

When I’m praying my blouse’s zip makes a little sound with my movements. Can this invalidate my prayer?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that this message finds you well, insha’Allah.

No, accidentally raising your voice whilst supplicating during the prayer does not invalidate it. Similarly, the fact that an item of clothing makes a sound during the prayer is of no legal consideration.

Remember that the operating assumption regarding the prayer is validity and soundness; and a sound way to determine whether or not you have invalidated the prayer is to imagine that an onlooker saw you at this moment: would they consider you to be praying or not?
