Does the Usage of Self-Catheterization To Pass Urine Invalidate the Fast?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

I am required to self-catheterize every other day, which involves a tube being inserted through the front passage right into the bladder to allow my urethra to stay open and pass urine.

Does this procedure invalidate the fast, and can it be done while I’m fasting during Ramadan?

Answer

No, this procedure would not break your fast. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al Falah]

May Allah give you well-being and heal this affliction. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The prayer of three particular people has not rejected: the just ruler, someone who is fasting until he breaks his fast, and the prayer of the oppressed.” [Tirmidhi]

Ask Allah for well-being during your fast if you are given it, alhamdulillah. If the response is delayed or it comes in another form, alhamdulillah – you still benefit.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
