How Often Does One Check for Irregular Discharge?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I used to have regular clear/white vaginal discharge, but recently, I have started to have small amounts of light green discharge as well, without any odor or symptoms or signs of infection. It comes randomly throughout the day, sometimes clear, sometimes green. I understand that it is to be considered impurity.

My question is, how often should I check to see if it’s clear or green since it’s random? Also, if my underwear is wet because of doing Istinja without drying and the green discharge comes in contact with it/the private part, but there is no apparent stain on the underwear, no smell or anything. Has the impurity transferred to the wet underwear or not? Jazak Allah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

If you are having a colored vaginal discharge, then this will be considered irregular bleeding, it will nullify wudu. You should renew wudu if you have a colored discharge.

You should check when you want to pray and do any act of worship which requires wudu.

If the discharge comes into contact with your underwear, then change it due to the colored discharge being impure.

It seems that you are having a bout of irregular bleeding. Just do wudu and pray as usual. While in this state, you can do things as usual: pray as expected, fast if it is during the month of Ramadan, recite the Quran and touch it, enter a mosque, perform Tawaf with wudu, and have intimacy with one’s husband.

Six Main Colors of Blood

The six main blood colors are black, red, brown, yellow, turbid, and green. The different colors of blood do not influence the rulings during the days of menstruation. As a general principle, all colors are equal.

Advice – Record Your Menses

A woman’s habit is her body’s usual pattern of when blood and purity are seen during the month and for how many days.

Every woman must record her menses, lochia, and purity habits. The date and time any vaginal blood begins, including the spotting of blood, and the date and time any vaginal blood ends. [Naielah Ackbarali, The Woman’s Guide to Menstruation Rulings]

Comparison of Different Vaginal Discharges

Normal Vaginal Discharge is completely white or clear, like cloudy lotion, egg whites, pasty, or tacky or clear. There is a difference of opinion. However, it is akin to sweat and pure and clean.

Discharge from vaginal infections is white, gray, or green. It is clumpy, fish stench, the vagina itches or burns, the vulva gets swollen, or the sex hurts. Wudu is required, and it’s filthy.

Arousal fluid is clear, the quality of it is wet, sticky, and slippery, only exits upon arousal, and wudu is required.

Orgasmic Fluid is yellow, and the quality is thin and watery at the time of orgasm; a ghusl is required, and it is filthy. [Ackbarali, A Muslim Woman’s Guide to Menstruation Rulings]
