Is It Obligatory upon Me to Perform the Sacrifice of Eid al-Adha?

Question

I am a single Muslim male of 23 years living with my parents. I started earning six months ago. Is qurbani fardh on me? I started earning six months ago and don’t reach the nisab value from my own earned money yet.

Answer

As long as your wealth does not exceed the zakatable-minimum, you don’t have to perform this sacrifice.

Slaughtering a sheep or 1/7th of a cow or camel is necessary upon a person who is:

  1. Muslim
  2. Resident, meaning not a traveler
  3. Possesses the minimum amount to make sadaqat al-fitr obligatory upon him or her, which is the same as the zakatable-minimum (nisab) except that one takes all one’s wealth into account when calculating.

If the above conditions are fulfilled, it would be obligatory to purchase an animal to slaughter, and this slaughtering is to be performed on any of the three days of Eid al-Adha after the Eid prayer. Doing so on the first day is optimal. [Tumurtashi, Tanwir al-Absar; Haskafi, al-Durr al-Mukhtar]
