Is It Sinful to Buy Clothes or Jewelry Containing Harmful Chemicals?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it sinful to buy or use items like clothes or jewelry from shops if they may contain harmful chemicals?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question and for trying to be conscious and ethical in what you wear and use.
It is not sinful to buy or use items that contain these types of chemicals. You can choose ethical products and items that are sourced responsibly. Opting for organic fabrics helps reduce exposure to pesticides and harmful dyes. Look for certifications that ensure low or no toxic chemicals. Consider natural performance fabrics.
Additionally, washing new clothes before wearing them can help remove any leftover chemical residues.
Who is a Strong Believer?
Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said
“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, but there is goodness in both of them. Be eager for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be frustrated and give up. If something afflicts you, then do not say: If only I had done something else. Rather, say Allah has decreed what he wills. Verily, the phrase ‘if only’ opens the way for the work of Satan.” [Muslim]
The beautiful Prophetic narration mentioned above teaches us to strive to become “strong believers.” But what kind of strength did the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) have in mind?
