Is Selling Wire Animal Sculptures Permissible in Islam?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible in Islam to create and sell wire sculptures of abstract or partially realistic animals for a livelihood?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Wire sculptures are typically abstract or skeletal rather than realistic. Therefore, it may be permissible to create and sell them, provided that the face is merely an outline with no eyes or nose visible and that they do not serve inappropriate purposes, such as idol worship. However, it is advisable to avoid it, as there are differing opinions among jurists regarding this issue, and one could easily fall into prohibited sculpturing practices.
