Should I Repeat the Takbir if I Mispronounce it?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

  1. If one doesn’t pronounce the starting takbir properly, will he have to break the salah and pray again?
  2. What about his iqamah? If he is praying fard alone and he didn’t pronounce the takbir properly. Should he repeat the iqamah?
  3. In the silent prayers do we have to say Subhana rabbiya al-Adhim and Subhana Rabbiyal-Ala silently, also? If one intentionally or unintentionally says it out loud, will it break his salah? What about if one says the takbirs throughout the prayer and tasmi’ ( samia’ Allahu liman hamida) and tahmid (Rabbana lakal hamd) aloud?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Answer One

The tahrima [opening Allahu akbar of the prayer], the place which is the tongue; hence, it must be uttered such one can hear himself, is a fard. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al Sa’adat]

Don’t worry about its sounds, it is a simple wording, and it is probably pronounced correctly, ignore misgivings. I am assured they were uttered reasonably sound. Just to remove your doubt, ask a local scholar how you utter the words and whether they are correctly uttered.

Answer Two

No, he will not have to repeat the prayer. He will have gone against the sunnah.

Again, ask a local scholar and have the Iqamah checked by him.

[Ala’uddin Ibn Abidin, Al-Hadiyya al-Ala’iyyah]

Answer Three

One has to say them silently – such that the person alone can hear himself. If said aloud it will not invalidate one’s prayer.

If one says the takbirs, tahmid and tasmi’ aloud of a loud prayer, it is absolute fine. One has the choice to pray a fard prayer aloud or silently. The former is superior for men. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]
