Was My Ghusl Valid without Any Intention (Niyya), Either Loudly or Silently?

Hanafi FiqhShafi'i Fiqh

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

While doing ghusl, I never made niyya either loudly or in my heart, because I already knew that I had to perform ghusl for that particular thing. Would that be valid?

Answer

Thank you for your question.  May Allah guide you in making your worship easy and simple.

If you never made an intention (niyya) for your ritual baths (ghusl), they would not be considered valid in the Shafi’i school. However, they would be valid in the Hanafi school.
