What Are My Obligations if Work Makes Me Miss Jumu‘a?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I am a plumber in Ontario working from 12 pm to 8 pm, Tuesday to Saturday, following Shafi fiqh. I quickly pray Zuhr and Asr at work, and pray Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr at home since my job starts late.
I can’t reach the masjid for Jumuah due to timing and travel, as I use my employer’s vehicle for service calls in various cities. I always miss Jumuah.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
This is a very important concern.
You are managing all your prayers very well except for the Jumu’a prayer. For which you just need to speak to your manager to allow you a short one-hour break so you can reach a nearby prayer.
The Friday prayer in congregation is a personal obligation for every adult Muslim man resident, not merely a communal one. So make a respectful but firm request. It is part of preserving your prayer, and many employers accommodate it when it is clearly requested, either by making up that hour or, as a last resort, by allowing a pay cut for that particular free hour.
Allah Most High said, “O believers! When the call to prayer is made on Friday, then proceed diligently to the remembrance of Allah and leave off your business. That is best for you if only you knew.” [Quran, 62:9]
It was narrated from Abu al-Ja’d al-Damri, who was a Companion of the Prophet (Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Whoever misses three Jumu’as out of negligence, Allah will place a seal over his heart.” [Nasa’i]
Jumua is obligatory for every male Muslim who has reached puberty and is not excused from the Friday Prayer, such as someone who is sick. [Nawawi, Minhaj al-Talibin]
This means it is a personal obligation, not merely a communal one. If it were merely a communal obligation, it would not be obligatory for every male to go as long as some went for the prayer.
On Your Work Travel
If a service call genuinely takes you out as a traveler in the Sacred Law’s sense, the Jumu’a prayer is not obligatory on you that day.
If you remain within your town, it remains obligatory. Assess each Friday on its own merits and contact local scholars for guidance.
Hold the Matter with Hope
Habitually missing Jumu’a is serious, yet you are not going to ask your employer for the impossible. Just the effort of making the request.
Allah sees that effort and will give you ease, in sha Allah. May Allah reward you for your care in your prayer and make this matter easy for you.
And Allah knows best.
