What Is the Ruling on Post-Surgery Bleeding and Prayer?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

After hysteroscopic surgery, causing continuous bleeding, when do I pray, and how to determine my period, and distinguish menstruation from surgical bleeding when my cycle is irregular?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are well and that your recovery is going smoothly.

Navigating both surgical recovery and questions of purity and prayer is genuinely difficult. Your care to ask reflects concern and, insha’Allah, a beautiful presence of heart. Thank you for your question.

Determining Menstruation

In the Hanafi school, return to your last established habit — the number of days you normally menstruated before the surgery.

Count those days as menstruation (hayd) from the onset of the bleeding. Anything beyond your habit days, or any bleeding lasting more than 10 consecutive days, is irregular bleeding (istihada). [Ibn ’Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

Praying with Continuous Bleeding

Continuous irregular bleeding makes you a person with a chronic excuse (ma’dhura).

Make fresh ablution (wudu) at each obligatory prayer time. That ablution covers all prayers—obligatory and voluntary—within that window.

Before each prayer, apply protection to minimize the flow as much as possible. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

Pray standing as normal. If your doctor has confirmed that standing causes harm or worsens the bleeding, pray sitting — and if you cannot sit, lying down. [ibid.]

Ease Is the Foundation, Not the Exception

Allah Most High says: “Allah intends ease for you; He does not intend hardship for you.” [Quran, 2:185]

Your obligation to pray does not fall away. The means adapt fully to your condition. Pray with full confidence — these prayers are completely valid and fully accepted.

The fiqh of menstruation (hayd) is individually obligatory for every woman to know.

Learning it fully is itself an act of worship — and a deep mercy. I warmly encourage you to study it systematically. SeekersGuidance offers free courses on purification and prayer that cover this in depth.

And Allah knows best.
