Question

Please can you describe and provide the Arabic text and translation for talqin al-mayyit (reminding the deceased) which is said at the graveside after the burial to assist the deceased with their questioning by the Angels.

Answer

I pray you are well.

Imam Shurunbulali says regarding the talqin (remind the deceased of their religion):

“It is done by saying, ‘O so-and-so, son of so-and-so, remember the religion that you practiced in the life of the Dunya (world) with the testimony of ‘There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace).’” [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

The exact wording of the Arabic does not have to be used. The point is to remind them of their Lord being Allah, the Prophet being Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace), and their religion being Islam. This brings them comfort and ease after the difficult ordeals of death.

May Allah grant us all a beautiful, fragrant end with Him pleased with Us.
