Is Someone a Non-Muslim If They Break Their Promises and Trust?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
“There is no faith in one who cannot be trusted, and there is no religion in one who cannot uphold his covenants.” [Ahmed]
Is a person who cannot be trusted and breaks his covenant a non-Muslim according to the above hadith?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Anas ibn Malik (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “There is no faith for one who cannot be trusted. There is no religion for one who cannot uphold a covenant.” [Ahmad]
This means one does not have complete faith, which is a sign of weak faith if he betrays the trust or does not fulfill a promise. It does not mean he has lost his faith (iman) and is now a non-Muslim. Thus, it is an exaggerative statement and a way of emphasizing our trust and promises as much as we possibly can.
