Question

What should I do if my parents oppose my Islam and refuse to let me marry a Muslim?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate.

May Allah grant you strength, steadfastness, ease, assistance, and facilitation.

Turning to Allah and Cultivating Steadfastness

This situation requires turning sincerely to Allah, asking Him for strength, committing yourself to steadfastness, and cultivating spiritual resilience. Allah Most High tells us,

“O believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.” [Quran, 2:153]

True success begins by approaching all matters with faith. Every test ultimately comes from Allah, and if one responds with reliance upon Him, seeking Him, and acting in a way that is pleasing to Him, then one is successful regardless of the apparent outcome. In this sense, the believer always wins.

Being Firm Upon Truth With Wisdom

Allah calls the believers to firmness upon what is right and pleasing to Him. This includes being steadfast upon truth, goodness, and what is correct, and also being firm in seeking one’s rightful matters for the sake of Allah Most High.

If parents are staunch in opposing Islam, the response is not to waver, but to be even more steadfast in upholding Islam. This steadfastness, however, must be coupled with wisdom and good character.

Upholding Good Character With Parents

One of the greatest keys in dealing with parents, and with all relationships, is good character. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught that while not all people can be reached through wealth or status, all people can be reached through good character.

Regardless of how your parents behave, uphold the excellence of character with them. If you err, become upset, or argue with them, have the strength to apologize. Do not concede what is right, and do not accept what is wrong, but maintain dignity, patience, and kindness.

Seeking Strength, Knowledge, and Counsel

Allah calls the believers to be steadfast, to outdo others in steadfastness, and to fortify themselves. This includes acquiring spiritual and religious strength, gaining knowledge, and seeking practical guidance on how to navigate complex situations wisely.

Part of this process is consulting scholars and wise advisors in your community who can help you navigate a matter as sensitive and difficult as this. Their mentorship can provide clarity, balance, and practical steps forward.

Marriage and Your Rights

It is your right, as an adult, to marry someone suitable for you. While you should strive to win over your parents and seek their goodwill, they cannot ultimately prevent you from marrying a Muslim. This must be navigated with resolve, spiritual strength, patience, and good character.

May Allah grant you ease, assistance, steadfastness, and facilitation in all your affairs.

And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
