Does Lying about Marriage Cause Marriage and What Can I Do Seeing Patterns of Cross on Clothing?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Does lying about being married to a person cause a marriage to that person?

Also, I have lots of misgivings regarding seeing crosses on clothes, even if there’s just a plain cotton fabric, sometimes when I look closely at that plain fabric, I see little cross shapes (of the same color as the fabric) or on some trousers, the stitching is such that two lines intersect making it look like a cross. Is it permissible to wear such clothing?

I have sent quite a few questions regarding my misgivings, and I appreciate the answers given to me before.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Lying about being married to a person does not cause a marriage to that person. This is just a misgiving.

Also, do not worry about seeing patterns and shapes of crosses on clothes.

Do Not Worry

Do not worry. This is not shirk or kufr, as you are not doing anything which negates your faith. The thoughts are like the thoughts certain companions had. When they told the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) that they had unspeakable thoughts, he said to them that their finding then abhorrent was “clear faith.” [Muslim] He did not criticize them for their thoughts.

Let the thoughts come in, and then let them go out. You are not choosing them and are not accountable for them. The more you focus on them, the stronger they will get.

Pray two rak‘at of Prayer of Need (Salat al-Haja) and ask Allah Most High to remove your anxieties and misgivings.

Keep Your Tongue Moist with Isti‘adha and the Following Dua

“.اَللّٰھُمَّ اجْعَلْ وَسَاوِسَ قَلْبِیْ خَشْیَتَکَ وَ ذِکْرَکَ وَاجْعَلْ ھِمَّتِیْ وَھَوَایٰ فِیْمَـا تُـحِبُّ وَ تَرْضٰی”
(O Allah! Render the thoughts and inclinations within my heart to be Your fear and remembrance, and let my endeavor and desire be devoted to what You love and are pleased with.) [Daylami, Musnad al-Firdaws]
