Is It Permissible to Undergo Labiaplasty to Correct a Physical Defect?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

Is it permissible to undergo labiaplasty for both beautification and health reasons, especially to shorten unusually long labia, and must the procedure be performed by a female doctor?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

If there is a deformity or a physical defect that causes health issues, it is permissible to treat it through surgery. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

In this case, it would be ideal and best to find a female surgeon to do the procedure. If that is not possible or unduly difficult, it is permissible to go forward with the procedure anyway. [Ibid.]
